Preparing for Abdominoplasty

Dr. Patrick Proffer will work with you before abdominoplasty to evaluate your needs and help you determine whether or not a tummy tuck is your best option. In many cases, we recommend liposuction to complement and enhance your tummy tuck results. Abdominoplasty can also be combined with body lift surgery to remove excess skin from the entire body at once.

The Tummy Tuck Procedure

There are three types of tummy tuck surgery. Dr. Proffer will explain each procedure and help you identify the surgery that is right for you:

• Standard Abdominoplasty: This treatment tightens the skin along the entire abdominal wall. Standard tummy tuck surgery requires incisions running along the length of the lower abdomen, allowing Dr. Proffer to relocate the navel in order to tighten the skin more effectively.
• Mini-abdominoplasty: This quicker, less invasive surgery only tightens skin below the navel. It has the advantage of a shorter incision, quicker recovery, and less scarring, but is only appropriate for patients with less serious needs.
• Extended Abdominoplasty: The most thorough and most invasive tummy tuck is known as extended abdominoplasty. Using this procedure, Dr. Proffer can tighten skin on the upper and lower abdomen and also along the sides of the torso. Incisions from extended abdominoplasty run around the hips and onto the back, making it possible to remove stubborn love handles.

Because the procedure takes several hours, a tummy tuck is usually performed under general anesthesia at our surgical facilities. A briefer, less extensive mini-abdominoplasty can often be performed under sedation and local anesthesia.

Recovering from Abdominoplasty

After their procedure, abdominoplasty patients stay overnight in our surgery center. We prescribe pain medications to help control any discomfort associated with the procedure. Light activity usually becomes comfortable within 10 to 20 days, but more strenuous activity, including exercise, will not be possible for at least six weeks.
