Permanently Remove Your Double Chin with Liposuction

Posted by Dr. Patrick Proffer on February 25, 2020

A double chin can be such a frustrating cosmetic problem. Not only does it make your profile less attractive, but it can also make you look heavier overall. Plus, it’s hard to feel confident when you see a double chin every time you pick up your phone.

So what can you do about it? Well, you can try exercise, though very little evidence exists to support the results. You could settle for your double chin, feeling self-confident and looking older than you really are. Or, you could thin down your neck with liposuction. As strange as it sounds, the third option may be your best choice.

For years, liposuction has sucked up extra fat on the stomach, back, and thigh areas. But now, this treatment is being used for an entirely new purpose: removing the loose tissue responsible for double chins. It’s called neck contouring, and it’s quickly become one of the biggest treatments in the nation.

Before you decide whether neck contouring could be right for you, here’s everything you need to know about the procedure and its benefits.

What Causes A Double Chin?

Sometimes, a double chin develops as a result of weight gain. Unfortunately, when this is the case, even losing weight doesn’t guarantee that it will disappear. The neck area is extremely difficult to target through exercise.

Other times, a double chin can simply be genetic and have nothing to do with your bodyweight or fitness level. If older relatives in your family have a double chin, your chances of developing one are much higher.

Another big culprit of double chins? Age. As we age, our skin loses its natural elasticity. This can cause the skin under the neck to droop. People with a genetic predisposition to low skin elasticity or who are a larger weight are especially at risk.

There are a lot of gimmicks on the market that claim to tone your chin, but there is very little evidence that a chin can be toned. The only real solution is to reduce skin volume and fat content. That’s where treatments like liposuction come in. Liposuction is one of the only permanent solutions for a double chin, and it comes with fewer side effects than other surgical options.

How Does Neck Contouring With Liposuction Work?

Your neck contouring procedure starts with 1-2 tiny incisions hidden beneath the chin or behind the ears. Then, an experienced surgeon will use a liposuction device to remove excess fat and sculpt a natural look.

After the procedure, you may wear a special supportive neck strap for a few days. You can return to work within a week and resume all your regular activities within two weeks. Some patients experience swelling and bruising after the treatment, but these side effects resolve 10-14 days after the procedure.

The results will be immediate and permanent. Because fat typically accumulates where fat cells already exist, you don’t have to worry about your double-chin coming back.

Is Liposuction Right For You?

A good candidate for chin liposuction is anyone who has a double chin caused by excess fat. Both men and women deal with this issue, and as long as they’re in good health, they are both great candidates. If your double chin is due to very loose skin, and not a lot of subdermal fat, you may opt for a neck lift instead.

In fact, having your double chin removed via liposuction can sometimes make it appear as if you’ve lost a lot of weight, when all you’ve really done is alter your chin to match the rest of your physique.

What Are Your Other Options?

Neck lifts are the most common alternative to liposuction. This treatment targets loose, sagging skin rather than excess fat. So, if your double-chin doesn’t have a lot of tissue in it, a neck lift could be the better option.

Another alternative is Kybella injections. This injectable eats fat cells slowly, giving you a gradual slender neck. You will need multiple treatments to get the desired results. If you aren’t comfortable going under the knife for a permanently slender contour, Kybella injections may be right for you.
