The Different Types Of Gynecomastia: Which One Do You Have?

Posted by Dr. Patrick Proffer on October 12, 2021

All of us want to feel confident in our own skin, and men are no different! But if you don’t feel comfortable with the way your chest looks, that can feel impossible.           gynecomastia-types-glandular-fatty

One common and yet seldom talked about condition can destroy your self-confidence and make going shirtless something you dread. This condition is called Gynecomastia, and according to the Mayo Clinic, 30 percent of men will develop it at some point in their lives.

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is an unusual enlargement of the breast tissue in men and adolescent boys. If you have this condition, you probably avoid taking off your shirt around other people. You may wear thick shirts or several layers of clothing to hide your chest. Maybe, you even feel embarrassed around your partner.

Gynecomastia is inconvenient and uncomfortable, especially in the summer months. Yet many of the men who suffer from the symptoms of gynecomastia don’t realize that it’s a treatable condition. There are procedures that will restore your natural-looking, male chest and boost your self-confidence.

The type of treatment you need will depend on the type of gynecomastia you have. There are three conditions that can cause your breasts to look large: glandular gynecomastia, fatty gynecomastia, and loose skin in the breast area.

For some, breast reduction surgery can make a significant difference. For others, excision may be the best option to make sure your new chest looks exactly as you would like it to.

Glandular gynecomastia is the result of an excess of estrogen in the male body. Thanks to environmental factors like plastic, pesticide-laden foods, and medications, more and more men are becoming estrogen-dominant. When this happens, the glandular breast tissue can become enlarged.

As a man’s estrogen production increases, his testosterone production decrease. The increase in estrogen combined with the decrease in testosterone automatically signals the body to create more fat in the chest area, which becomes the source of even more estrogen, which increases breast tissue size.

It’s a vicious cycle that no amount of diet and exercise can overcome. Luckily, by removing excess glandular and fatty tissue in the breast area, you can break the cycle once and for all.

This type of gynecomastia can happen as you age and your testosterone levels naturally begin to drop. That’s why many younger boys may find themselves with larger chests—despite being active and a healthy weight.

Sometimes excess weight gain can cause fatty gynecomastia, aka pseudo-gynecomastia, when the excess fat cells begin collecting in the breast area. On the surface, gynecomastia and pseudo-gynecomastia look the same. But there’s a core difference: the part of your chest that is enlarged.

While glandular gynecomastia is enlarged breast tissue, pseudo-gynecomastia causes enlarged pectoral fat cells. It’s a common and equally embarrassing problem. Many men and boys who struggle to keep their weight down develop fatty gynecomastia.

Fatty gynecomastia can sometimes be improved with diet and exercise. It’s often a difficult and time-consuming process. You’ll need to do workouts that target the chest, core, and shoulders. Switching to a diet with fewer carbs, sugars, and dairy can also help.

If diet and exercise still don’t do the trick, breast reduction surgery is a good option. Having liposuction in the breast area can significantly minimize the appearance of breast tissue without weight loss.

Excessive Skin Of The Breast Area

Weight loss isn’t a guaranteed treatment for fatty gynecomastia. Sometimes the damage has already been done.

If you lose a significant amount of weight without effectively toning your chest, your skin can become stretched. Even though you won’t have as much fat under your breast tissue, the size of breasts may not improve. In these cases, the best option is plastic surgery focusing on the removal of the excess skin through excision.
